Seasonal Effect of Eicosanoids on Pulmonary Function in Asthma with Concomitant Rhinitis Caused By Japanese Cedar Pollinosis.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Rationale
Asthma with seasonal rhinitis (ASR) often shows an increased airway responsiveness resulted from exposure to corresponding aeroallergen, leading to impairment of asthma control. Eicosanoids are likely involved in this clinical response. However, little is known regarding the changes of eicosanoids during the pollen season and those effects on pulmonary function. Here, we evaluated whether inflammatory eicosanoids increase in airway during pollen season and influence on pulmonary function in ASR.
Methods
Forty two adult patients with asthma with concomitant rhinitis were recruited and classified into the patients sensitized to Japanese cedar pollen group (SJCP) and not sensitized group. Cysteinyl leukotriens (cysLT)s, thromboxane B2 (TXB2), prostaglandin D2(PGD2) and leukotrien B4 (LTB4) in exhaled breath condensate during the pollen season and the off-season were measured by EIA. The concentrations of those lipid mediators and results from pulmonary function test (PFT) were compared.
Results
CysLTs and LTB4 significantly increased in SJCP (p = 0.013, respectively) during the pollen season. TXB2 was tend to be increased in SJCP (p = 0.058). Pulmonary function didn't show significantly seasonal change, however, changes of cysLTs and TXB2 between two seasons were negatively correlated with %FEV1 in SJCP (p = 0.003 for cysLTs, p=0.02 for TXB2, respectively).
Conclusions
ASR caused by Japanese cedar pollinosis is associated with increase of leukotriens in the airways. Furthermore, cysLTs likely contributes to modification of pulmonary function in those patients during the pollen season.
