Pollen grains are amongst the commonest allergens in allergic patients.
Pollen allergy is now a public health problem due to its elevated prevalence and associated costs in terms of impaired work fitness, sick leave, consulting physicians and drugs, are very high.
In the European Community countries between 8% and 35% of young adults show IgE serum antibodies to grass pollen allergens that are the most commonly encountered.
Major pollens involved in rhinitis and asthma besides grass include birch overall in northern countries and ragweed in east-central Europe.
